#STEPHENLAWRENCEDAY: A LEGACY OF CHANGE
21st of April 2021 marks 28 years since Stephen Lawrence was murdered in a racially charged attack while his friend Duwayne Brooks managed to escape unhurt.
Stephen Lawrence was a black British teenager, murdered in a racially targeted attack on the evening of 22nd April 1993. The attack was unprovoked and came while he waited for a bus in Eltham. His death and the following botched police investigation raised many issues about police practices and the inherent racial discrimination prevalent in most institutions in the UK. It also brought to light serious issues of racial prejudice, and the country’s tolerance towards it. While keeping Stephen’s memory in mind, the day also encourages communities at large to have open conversations about a “fairer society” built on equality and reform.
This year, Stephen Lawrence Day comes just 5 days after Derek Chauvin has been found guilty of the murder of an unarmed black man, George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA that made headlines across the world. As the Black Lives Matter moment gains momentum and coverage that it rightfully deserves, Stephen Lawrence Day is yet another reminder for people to be the change they wish to see.
