#EARTHDAY
Earth Day, celebrated every year on 22nd April marks the anniversary of the birth of the Modern Environmental movement which began in 1970. It commemorates the emergence of public consciousness regarding the state of the planet.
With the industrial revolution well under way, the world was constantly looking for resources in the environment. Air pollution was at one point synonymous with the smell of prosperity. The world carried on, oblivious to the environmental concerns and strangers to the idea of sustainability. However, Silent Spring (published in 1962) by Rachel Carson set the stage for an environmental revolution and sold 500,00 copies in over 24 countries. It shed light on the concerns for environmental awareness and safeguarding the nature. In the 1990’s, environmental leaders under the guidance of Denis Hayes were able to mobilize 200 million people in over 141 countries for a campaign encouraging protection for plant earth.
Today, Earth Day is marked as a day to create change in human behavior and create national as well as global changes in environmental policy. There is a sense of urgency in the light of severe climate change, to make small changes every day. With the help of social media, there is a large audience participating in the conversation today that can help be a catalyst for environment al reform.
