In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and global protests against system and institutional racism and prejudice, there has never been a more important time to implement accessible support and development opportunities for the vulnerable and at-risk younger generation. Hussain Manawer, founder of The White Rose Foundation which, supported by Trinity Buoy Wharf Trust and Hackney Empire, is this month launching Compulsory Subjects

Compulsory Subjects aims to provide insight, support and development opportunities for the next generation of creative entrepreneurs and activists. Young people will be invited to take part in a weeklong programme of sessions and workshops, during the 17th – 21st August, with leaders from the worlds of music, entrepreneurship, mental health, media, and activism.

The fully digital programme not only safeguards the health and wellbeing of participants, but also creates more opportunity for young people to access the provision. The programme will explore art, activism, business, self-employment, entrepreneurship, psychology and sociology in a safe space. Sessions will be delivered by high-profile guest facilitators and industry experts, for a scheme of work designed to develop creative identity, self-awareness, and business knowledge.

Hussain Manawar commented: “My mum passed away three years ago now and whilst she was alive she consistently told me the importance of giving back. Which is why I aim to continue her legacy through The White Rose Foundation and it's launch of what will hopefully be many free educational courses, the first one being: Compulsory Subjects. The discussion points on sociology, psychology, arts and activism have never been more important. Equipping young people with tools and skills that will not only serve in a professional manner but also aid their personal lives is key. I am excited to have been able to call upon some of my nearest and dearest friends to help support this and am so buzzing to see and feel the conversations in the room.”

Yamin Choudhury and Professor Til commented: “Compulsory Subjects! Is everything we wish was currently being taught and provided to young people especially after the year we have all had. We are thrilled to announce this is happening after months of planning and cannot wait to see these powerful sessions come to life. It's as important now more than ever we give the youth our time, our experience, expertise and most of all opportunities to further self-develop, network and grow as individuals.”
