POC DESIGNERS ARE LEFT BEHIND AT THE MET GALA 2021

Affectionately referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out”, the Met Gala is the glamorous event where stars, young creatives and industry paragons are invited to show off their creativity through their ‘unique’ outfits. In previous years, the Gala have made it a point to be more ‘inclusive’, however it seems this year, they’ve missed the mark.

The Met Gala is supposed to celebrate unique and colourful designs yet it seems to evade POC designers. Though Hollywood have seemed to accept the inclusivity of different backgrounds with celebrities like Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Keke Palmer (who happened to be the co-host of the event), it seems to be tiptoeing around POC creatives.

Unfortunately this year at the Gala, there were only a handful of Black American designers highlighted. Formula One Driver Lewis Hamilton even paid for young black designers to attend the event and let them sit on his table, making a point to shine further light on POC designers. A positive and much needed effort to do so, though it’s still not enough.

It seems, yet again, Hollywood is doing the bare minimum till it is pulled up.
